This cozy East Village spot is a mezcaleria/tequila bar with an extensive list and an authentic Mexican taqueria with more than a dozen taco types. A few stools line the tiled bar, and the modern dining area has an exposed brick wall, wooden ceiling beams pierced by bare lightbulbs, and a floral mural opposite open windows looking out onto East 13th. Start with the satisfying guacamole, with round housemade totopos corn chips. It’s a better option that the chicharron de queso, which is essentially a hollow cylinder of flattened Cheez-Its. Alambres, the only entrée on the menu, tops four small tortillas with your choice of three mixed proteins, from small cubes of costilla (rib-eye steak) or tocino (bacon) to sliced hongos (mushrooms) or slivers of nopal (cactus). Otherwise, mix and match tiny (but fully loaded) tacos from a checklist-style menu. Tacos “al pastor” combine pork from a spit grill with onions and pineapple, while the rest of the options are “al carbon,” or coa-grilled. Some of the simpler tacos, like the cecina (just a flat disk of salty beef) or the bistec (tiny steak cubes), may leave you wanting a garnish. Luckily, three salsas and an onion/habanero mixture are on the table for your enjoyment. Don’t miss the outstanding ice-cream sundaes, either.Recommended Dishes
