Profile

Fans of Japanese food who remember this Murray Hill address as La Maison Japonaise have a Nipponese-inspired reason to return: It’s become the new home of Shaburi, a Taiwanese chainlet that opened its first Stateside branch in 2004. The menu is devoted to two Japanese classics—sukiyaki and shabu-shabu made with luxe ingredients like lobster, kurobuta pork, and the highly esteemed matsuzaka beef. There’s a global cast to appetizers like carpaccio of sea urchin with “Italian” sauce, and king-crab seafood salad in a mustard-yogurt dressing. House sushi rolls come grilled, tempura-battered, or deep-fried.

Stomach is growling after shelling out $80 for shabu for two!

Where do I begin? One shabu entree is $25+ and you get about 8 slices of meat. You get a pan stacked with haphazardly strewn napa cabbage bits. You have to pay for your udon/rice portion. The service was abysmal. I never did get my green tea. I was given the wrong sake after requesting "house sake" twice. Waitress spilled the sake all over the table and my coat. We had to keep reminding the waitress that we needed more scallion, chili powder etc. After all, she gave the two of us like 10 bits of scallion to begin with. It's only been two hours since we sat down and my STOMACH IS GROWLING. I need a second dinner tonight! I think I'll stick with Shabu Tatsu in the E. Village for now.

One of my favorites.

This another favorite place of my wife and I. She goes there frequently for lunch during work, and we come for dinner ont he weekend. I'm a big fan of Shabu-Shabu and cooking at the table. The sushi is great. I've had better, but it's what you expect from a quality establishment and I have no complaints. Warm dishes stand out more for me their. Highlights are the Foie Gras Harumaki, the Kobe Beef Sushi, they tend to have great Uni (always best to ask). Service is great and the bartender is creative and friendly serving refreshing drinks to match your Shabu-Shabu. Give the Wasabi Caipirinha or a Sparkling Sake a try.
