100 Mott St.,
New York, NY 10013
|
Shanghai Café’s austere brown and glass façade is easy to overlook amid the bustle of Mott Street, but once inside, this Chinatown spot gives way to a melange of pink neon lights, piping hot stacks of steam crates, and robust soy- and ginger-laden flavors. Opened by Suzie Chang in 2003, the walls here are painted in corals, oranges, and pinks, and contrasting stark metal tables line the crowded floor. The place is packed with a comforting mix of soup-dumpling pros, who have mastered the nibble-slurp-chew-repeat process, as well as dough-eyed rookies, whose chins drip with rogue streaks of broth. The soup dumplings here have skins thicker than average, which diners may or may not like; but at least they won’t break when chopsticks transfer them from steamer to spoon.
Recommended DishesPork soup dumplings, $4.95; beef fried rice, $5.95
