For mediocre North Indian food most people would rather go to Jackson Heights than Flushing. But there's something touching about New Shere Punjab, a low-ceilinged shoebox of a restaurant, with its abundance of mirrors, faux marble laminate paneling and Mughal paintings set against a backdrop of chintzy floral wallpaper. Opening the meal, pakoras, made with chickpea flour, come out lighter than the overfried, hard-shelled samosas. For entrées, the attentive staff makes standard recommendations from the selection of lamb, goat, fish, chicken, and vegetarian curries, but the more exotic, non-cream-based combinations offer more texture. The karahi mutton dish holds tender pieces of lamb sauteed with onions, peppers, and tomatoes in a spicy paste that goes perfectly with the naan. Seafood is far less successful, since the house fish is salmon—too strong a flavor, especially if it's less than fresh, to work with the pungent spices. Dessert cravings would be better satisfied at one the nearby Chinese bakeries.
