Unless you are an aficionado of world music, you may not have heard of the Marrakech-born Hassan Hakmoun, but he is something like the Jerry Garcia of the sintir—a long-necked, three-stringed wood-and-camel-skin lute. He’s also somewhat of an authority on good Moroccan food: “In New York, there is none,” he says matter-of-factly. To rectify that sorry situation, he opened his own place in the East Village. Unlike his distinctive sound, which fuses Western influences with the music of Morocco’s Gnawa people, Hakmoun’s kitchen specializes in straight-up traditional fare (couscous, bisteeya, harira), and is run with an iron fist by his sister.

I have to say that I had questioned wether or not to come and eat at Sintir with all the different reviews(more good than bad). My experience was a great one! People, the ambiance was very cool and cozy and the pastilla and vegeterian cous cous was delicious. Service was very friendly and collected. As cozy the banquets are inside, I definetly perfer the calm and tropic feel outside.I am coming back on a night with music since I can only imagine the Sintir experience being even more uplifting and the best part......BYOB. So I can always enjoy my favorite wine.

Nice place to look at, horrible place to dine...

Overpriced, small portioned, bland food. Arrogant and rude staff. What a rip-off. I felt like a gullible tourist in the market in Marrakesh. Definitely the worst place in the East Village that I have been to - and I dine out at least a few time a week and like to check out new places. Don't get tricked by the somewhat quaint decor. This place won't last long if the keep it up.
