A bright spot in the culinary no-man's-land that is East End Ave., Sirabella's exemplifies what makes a good neighborhood restaurant. The affable owner Mario pauses at each table, checking in on regulars—many of them elderly, early diners—and welcomes newcomers without being intrusive. The skinny, pale green space is decorated with homespun flair: A saxophone and trumpet dangle jauntily above a horizontal mirror; on the opposite wall is a photographic series of still lifes—lemon slices by a half-filled glass, a bottle and stein on a doily. Outstanding Northern Italian eats seal the deal and set Sirabella's above the glut of its westward peers. Roasted loin of lamb comes crowned with pistachio shavings and honey mustard on a bed of spinach, surrounded by creamy mashed potatoes laced with a hint of gorgonzola. Calamari is sautéed in a powerfully pungent meld of balsamic vinegar and pesto. Homemade pastas echo with refrains of light tomato and cream sauces, porcini mushrooms, and seafood. Gourmet pizza and a slew of inventive salads complete the mix.
