Skinflints first opened as an ice cream shop in 1915, but today it's a destination for red meat, not rich malts. The restaurant keeps that old-fashioned feel by preserving the original stained glass windows and tin ceilings in the lively bar area and a darker dining room in back. Lifelong fans, as well as shoppers who work up an appetite at nearby Century 21, swear by the juicy burgers served on English muffins, but it's the barbecue baby back ribs that impress most. After slow cooking for six hours in the spicy house sauce, the meat barely stays on the bone. And while the food more than satisfies, it's the bar's laid-back neighborhood clientele that gives the place its distinct flavor.
Recommended DishesBBQ baby back ribs, $8.95 for 1/2 rack; burger, $6.75; chicken wings, $6.25
