Though the name is short for “Sounds of Brazil,” a globe’s worth of world music is showcased at this lively Soho venue, including reggaeton, hip-hop, Haitian jazz, and salsa. And though the noteworthy bands, infectious dance-club ambience, and expert mojitos are impressive, don’t expect to be equally wowed by dinner, which tends to be more of a meal ticket to great seats than a trip to edible heaven. Most of the tables, covered in iridescent green cloths and bathed in swirling pink and blue spotlights, line the edges of the dance floor. Entrées here are safely middle-of-the-road, Pan-Latino creations that showcase presentation over innovation, like the Bahia boat, a showy hollowed-out pineapple filled with sautéed shrimp in a too mild coconut and cilantro sauce. Simpler Brazilian specialties, like the feijoada, a hearty stew packed with black beans and flavorful chunks of beef and pork, fare better and give you the oomph for all the dancing you’re sure to do. Newbies will appreciate free dance lessons on Friday nights, along with the liquid encouragement of potent tropical drinks.
ExtraLearn your moves at free Latin dance classes on Friday nights before 7 p.m.
