Profile

This venue is closed.

It may have changed names (to attract, explains the co-owner sheepishly, “society”), but this boisterous, red-painted bar-cum-restaurant is still very much a college hangout. That’s hardly surprising, considering that it literally sits in the shadow of NYU housing. Inside, it has all the atmosphere of a keg party—four TVs blaring sports, a sticky bar, and black pleather stools with the stuffing popping out. But Society redeems itself in the balmy months with a breezy outdoor terrace strung with white lights. Much of the fare is glorified pub grub, built around the foremost question: What goes well with beer? Yes, that means predictable crowd-pleasers like sliders. But while the menu’s a big yawn, it’s appreciably fresh: plump quesadillas topped with sour cream squiggles, gooey mac and cheese. . . . As for Society’s attempts to go upscale? They’ve got a ways to go. Service can be glacial, the staff dress code seems to be tight jeans with a cell phone wedged in the back pocket, and—just a hunch—“society” might not take too kindly to the bouncer out front asking for ID.
