Profile

In the midst of grandiose Times Square, unassuming Sombrero serves up no-frills Mexican food. Catering to families and groups, the square room leaves no nooks for intimate dining. Warm-colored walls back Southwestern-inspired paintings, while floor-to-ceiling windows provide a view of the Theater District foot traffic outside. The complimentary chips and salsa have a kick, while the guacamole spills over in an edible tortilla bowl. Even a Mexican salad of greens, cactus, peas, tomatoes, onions, jack cheese, and jalapeños comes with crisp fried tortillas. Indecisives can score a Sombrero Combo platter with mix-and-match tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and tostadas with their choice of fillings, while the signature fajitas arrive sizzling with a selection of toppings. A three-course prix-fixe menu is available for busy tourists and hurried theatergoers, and a handful of tables line the sidewalk in warmer weather. Co-owner Patrick also runs Brazil Grill, right across the street.
