As one of the first restaurants to open during Times Square's transition from porn TV to MTV, Soul Café is a welcoming combination of youthful hipness and blue-suit professional. The doors are discreetly marked—walk by a little too quickly and you may mistake the entrance for a rundown nightclub—but once inside, patrons are seduced by dark woods, plush banquettes, classic R&B sounds and extremely dim chandelier lighting. Still, the restaurant's real allure is the food. Executive chef Miguel Lockhart prepares a medley of Southern, Caribbean and African-inspired entrées, such as braised oxtails with jaloof rice, jerk prawns with sweet potato soufflé and slightly wilted spinach, and Maryland blue crab cakes with balsamic dressing. Friday nights are often marked for singles, who sip colorful cocktails and nibble hors d'oeuvres at the bar while listening to live jazz from 9:30pm—11:30.
