At first glance, the menu at Soy and Sake is standard pan-Asian; Thai, Japanese, and Chinese staples share space with the occasional oddball like spaghetti and meatballs or Buffalo wings. The catch is that here, everything is vegetarian, made using compressed soy of all varieties. Ambitious fakes like “fish” sushi are lost in the protein translation, with odd textures playing against strongly flavored sauces. In other cases, though, the illusion works: the texture and taste of the “rock shrimp” tempura is spot-on. Not all dishes rely on fake meats, with tofu-oriented classics like pad thai handled well. The décor, however, relies on kitsch: a vaguely nautical semi-circular bar is accented by earth-tone tiles and a lighted aquarium in which various types of (non-soy) fish swim.
