An upstart rival to the Paneras and Chipotles of the world, Spicy Pickle has its own take on gussying up lunchtime classics with higher-quality ingredients. The branch at this Denver import is upbeat, with vaguely retro college rock playing, an exposed-brick wall, and vinyl-and-shiny-metal chairs that recall 1960s kitchen sets. The main offering, build-your-own sandwiches, are constructed from a selection of about 20 meats and cheeses and a similarly long list of condiments and toppings that include flavored mayonnaises, sprouts, peppers, and artichoke hearts. Served on either a big, puffy ciabatta or wonderfully non-greasy focaccia, the sandwiches are fresh and filling, if a tad bland. The non-freeform sandwiches, divided into grilled panini and only slightly bigger subs, may be a better option for those disinclined to micromanage their food. One refreshing standout, the Yard Bird, tarts up chicken slices with bacon, blue cheese, and green apples. Other sandwiches can be gloppy—tell them to hold the mayo if you’re not a devotee.
