Spreads is a good place to drop by on a nice day, order a smattering of sandwiches, sides, and desserts, and take a picnic out to Madison Square Park. You can dine in, but there are not too many seats and it’s busy for lunch. But the staff is also efficient, and you can be in and out in less than five minutes. There is a nice balance of creative vegan options here—like the applewood-smoked coconut “bacon” and avocado sandwich—with hearty meat-lover options like the salmon and bacon sandwich, or the schnitzel with pickled peppers. Each sandwich has some creative twist on the traditional. The turkey-avocado, for example, comes with a few tortilla chips tucked in for a welcome salty crunch. The enormous entrée salads are another good option, particularly the roasted butternut squash. Sides are all gluten-free and vegan friendly; try the kaleslaw over the quinoa. Cold-brewed coffee makes an excellent beverage to see you through the rest of the afternoon, unless you’re feeling particularly heady and want to try one of the house juices that land somewhere between root-vegetable soup and a smoothie. Top it all off with a ginger cookie or agave Greek yogurt with pineapple and cantaloupe, and head for the sunshine.
