The fourth outpost in Diane Wongprasert’s Manhattan chainlet brings timid Thai to a buzzy block of the Lower East Side. The promising menu of barbecue and family recipes is only nominally spicy while the namesake grain—coming in four varieties (white, brown, green pandanus, and yellow turmeric)—never fully compensates for the shortage in seasonings. When ordering basics like curries and noodles, be sure to ask servers to amp up the heat if you want any outside the type inspired by the leather and leopard-print banquettes you're seated on. — Michael Kaminer
I went here for a friends birthday. We showed up a few minutes late for our EARLY 6pm reservation, and get this: the manager kept calling us on our cell phones (we had to give him # to confirm res.) asking "Where are you?? Will you be on time??" Who does that??? Since it was a birthday we had several bottles of champagne people brought, but he would only give us one bottle cooler for them, saying that "other guests" (there were none) might need them. During the meal, he kept pestering us to leave, saying that he needed the table at 8pm, which is SO unprofessional, especially since we kept ordering more food & desserts. The restaurant was NOT filled yet he kept insisting that we had a time limit. Ive walked by on several occasions later and the restaurant is never populated. The owners/managers obviously dont understand hospitality or the restaurant business: you dont make the customer feel guilty or rushed, or theyll NEVER come back, no matter how decent the food is! Dont waste your time here, theres a reason why its never packed...
good food, but not enough to make up for the worst serivce
There are tons of good thai places around in the LES. Sticky rice had good food (and byob is nice), but it took an hour and a half to come. It took 20 mins to get water after sitting down, after requesting it, no idea where a wine store might be (byob!, how do you not know?) He never came and checked on us, was smoking right outside so smoke blew into my friends face, never brought us dessert menus, just left us sitting there for half and hour, and when my friend went to get them, he came by after like ten minutes and said, "do you want something, the kitchen just closed", umm I guess we don't then. Then after we left a like 12% tip for poor service, he had the audacity to come yell and curse at us. Outrageous. Then he went away and had the manager come give us a hard time. Thank goodness I was with good company, this could easily have ruined my night. I dont care if it was the best food on the planet. I will never be returning.
