Profile

Diners who don't mind a look borrowed from the hotel lounges of mid-nineties Miami will enjoy exceptional seafood at this Park Slope house of fusion. Peruvian wave rider/Bobby Flay disciple Miguel Aguilar has mastered the art of the wonderfully varied ceviche; he fashions ingenious combinations like ginger-pineapple tuna, crispy oyster avocado, and tender chilled octopus with aioli and pepper (a three-choice “tasting” plate is best for beginners). The kitchen’s most inventive selections may be openers like tapas zapallitos (sushi-style zucchini rolls filled with a creamy melange of shrimp, crab, and goat cheese), or inland standouts like chicharrones sliders with tender pulled pork and a striking salsa/sweet potato mash. Memorable salt-water entrees include a savory tilapia saute ladled with rich shrimp sauce and a thick slab of mahi mahi perfectly balanced by a light cauliflower puree. On the whole, Surfish’s uniformly excellent menu more than makes up for humdrum service and a notable lack of visual charm – and its generous back patio makes summer evenings even sweeter.
