As the menu at this Greenwich Village spot reads, the pizza here is the result of the dream of three Veronese brothers who, way back in 1995, after “working alongside the great pizza masters of Italy,” made their own series of pizza parlors in Verona. With Susanna, named after their mama, the brothers have brought their northern Italian fare to an area of Greenwich Village better known for its tourist bars, NYU kids, and fast fare—slices and shawarmas. The pizza, available in small and large sizes, is a little too flaccid: While the flavor is robust, it hangs like a late-night slice. What does hold up, though, marvelously so, are the crunchy “Pizzaccias” (think ultra-thin, folded-over pizza sandwiches) that, while remaining light as air, manage to be both hearty and packed with flavor. It’s highly recommended that you add toppings at will to the pizzacias, especially the fresh prosciutto. It’s the kind of fare that could lead one to imagine spending long, boozy summer nights and afternoons on the restaurant’s charming back patio. While the pastas and desserts won’t surprise or overwhelm, they’re beyond reasonably priced, as is the beer—while Susanna waits for its license, you can sample the excellent selection at the store across the street. Choose your dishes wisely and you and a date can enjoy an excellent meal at Susanna Pizzeria, or even a whole evening, for less than it would cost back in 1995.
