To eat here, patrons must ask to be seated in the basement sushi “speakeasy” that lies beneath the unassuming Italian American Greenwich Grill. Downstairs, the tomato-red walls and garlicky aroma are replaced with a bamboo ceiling and pebbled flooring surrounding an 8-seat sushi bar and three banquettes downstairs. But the best kept secret of this hideaway lies in its exciting list of lesser-known fish, like tender, light Pacific Saury; firm, slightly chewy pencil fish; and meaty silver beltfish. Diners are also treated to high-grade samples of more common offerings, like tuna and fluke. There’s an equally talented kitchen behind-the-scenes, preparing dishes such as hearty, miso-marinated black cod and juicy Wagyu beef tataki.
Recommended DishesGrilled black cod, $12; nigiri sushi, $3-$11 per piece
