Fifty percent off sushi is the draw at this grungy Japanese restaurant in the East Village, catering to a penny-pinching college crowd with bargain eats and a happy hour that starts at 10pm. Inside the well worn, mint-walled space, tiny tables teem with hungry diners ordering rolls, noodle soups, and entrees like teriyaki and tempura—with varying results. On the extensive menu, ramen and udon soups fare well, while overly complex “New York Pop Creation” rolls, stuffed with ingredients of questionable freshness, are at times downright inedible. And while the vegetables in a tempura appetizer can be tender and flavorful, the thick batter recalls pancake mix. Dining here, while inexpensive, is hit-or-miss. Sometimes you get what you pay for.
Recommended DishesChicken udon, $8.50; Spicy ramen, $8
