The most appealing aspect of this down-the-stairs midtown joint is the authentic Japanese vibe, which sometimes involves actual salarymen getting rowdy over bottles of beer or sake. Yet the sushi isn’t as reliable as you’d hope: Uni and scallop were fresh and clean-tasting on a recent visit, but other fish less so, including a rubbery surf clam that seemed past its prime; and the per-piece pricing can add up. Non-purists might have better luck with the rolls bearing names like Destiny Lover and Emerald Dragon. The kitchen part of the menu doesn’t redeem things either: Tempura is fine for a fried craving, and a fish-stock-infused miso soup would be fine, if it were served piping hot instead of merely warm.
