Profile

This small Japanese early-comer in Windsor Terrace balances a thriving takeout and delivery trade with genial table service in surroundings of wooden walls, Hiroshige-ish prints, and bamboo sconces. The sushi and sashimi are toothsome and fresh, with generous portions topping well-seasoned rice. Among the dozens of maki rolls, Japanese classics like thickly angled vermilion toro (belly tuna), translucent hamachi (whitefish) and pristine shrimp are delectable, while experiments such as the Lavender Roll, a log of tempura sweet potato, pumpkin, mango, avocado, and caramel, are inventive but cloying. Daily specials include the Yu Miso salad, a delicate stack of salmon morsels, sliced crisp asparagus, avocado, and greens dressed with a complex, smoky miso dressing, and the zaru soba, with tangles of chewy, nutty buckwheat noodles topped with soy and sesame seeds, and surrounded by ice cubes on a square serving dish. Feather-light tempura defies conventional deep-fried oblivion; a ruffled leaf of lettuce as wide as a man's hand arrives frilly and crisp, cased in the delicate, crunchy batter.

Extra

Though Windsor Terrace is hardly a bustling business hub, Sushi Yu's lunch specials, served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., lure hungry work-at-home (or slack-for-a-day) locals.
