This soda shop, an offshoot of the popular Brooklyn-based bakery, is situated next door to the Cobble Hill location. With this addition, Melissa Murphy’s sugary oeuvre now includes Basset’s Ice cream and fountain treats. Patrons can get quick cones and shakes at the front counter, or linger over more elaborate treats within the butter-colored walls of the dining room or the leafy back garden. Freshly made Belgian waffles come as fluffy squares topped with two scoops of classic ice cream flavors (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, coffee, pistachio or raspberry sorbet). But the real draw is “very special sundaes,” laden with Melissa’s homemade signature sauces. The high quality ingredients in the chocolate brownie sundae—a very creamy vanilla, decadently thick Valrhona hot fudge and light whipped cream—make it a stand-out indulgence. Some offerings are creative, like the berry bread pudding sundae, combining a warm almond bread pudding with strawberry ice cream, toasted almonds and jumbleberry sauce (a mix of dark fruits and lemon juice), but she doesn’t shun classics like egg creams and banana splits. You can also order soups, salads, sandwiches (and pastries) from the menu next door.
