At first glance, Tadka looks more like an upscale takeout place than a sit-down restaurant. Located up an unassuming flight of stairs on East 53rd Street, this tiny Indian eatery seats just twelve, but the large window in the front and slanted mirrors above the tables help make it feel more cozy than cramped. Lunch and dinner specials are your best bet; offering a choice of entrée accompanied by rice and a variety of naan breads, including paneer cheese, garlic, and a fruity and sweet raisin-nut variety. Papadum and samosa starters rise above par thanks to the especially-tasty dipping chutneys, chicken tikka masala is pleasingly rich, and the vegetarian aloo gobi is packed with large potato and cauliflower pieces. Be aware: the flavorful lamb vindaloo packs a lot of heat, but chef Francisco Vaz is more than willing to rachet it down for more sensitive palates.
