Tamari’s premise sounds exciting: Tapas encompassing Japanese, Spanish, and even Korean flavors. In reality, self-trained chef-owner Ken Kikuchi, who lived in Spain between his native Japan and current New York, doesn’t break any boundaries. Conventional appetizers hide behind coy names: Fried Caramari del Japon is just classic fried squid; Tuna Avocado Wasabi Tartare turns out to be chopped sashimi with avocado flecks. The kitchen acquits itself with gargantuan specialty sushi rolls that require hands instead of chopsticks: A meal on its own, the Unagi Typhoon wraps eel around coaster-size disks of crabstick, avocado, and shiitake. Cooked mains like teriyaki and tempura are adequate; an extensive sake menu and a loose, loungey mood reel in thirtysomething professionals known to linger in low-slung chairs long after meal’s end.
