Profile

Warm lighting, brick walls, a bar lined with wine bottles: Taverna Di Bacco has all the welcoming features of your favorite neighborhood trattoria, plus a hospitable chef who doesn’t mind tweaking menu items on the fly for the full-on Neapolitan grandmother experience. The meatballs, a smooth combination of beef, pork, and veal, roll in tomato sauce that’s so savory you’ll use all the bread on your table to mop it up. Al dente fusilli with earthy eggplant and zucchini bathes in a light cream sauce—you’ll not only lick your plate, you’ll make out with it. There are some missteps, like too-dense gnocchi and a forgettable braciola with rough-cut potato fries that are a little underdone, but have we mentioned the meatballs? In warmer months, the outdoor patio is a quiet enclave away from the Lower East Side’s evening revels.
