Thai Angel Kitchen isn’t the sort of restaurant most diners would schlep out of their way for, but it’s fine for a reasonably priced meal. Sporting a nightclub look that’s become prevalent among the city’s Thai spots, including its sister branch in Soho, this place gleams with slick chrome, globe-pendant lamps and decorative deities. Guests, though, are rather sparse and quiet, and the soundtrack tends toward ubiquitous Top 40 tunes. Rather than concentrated specialties, the kitchen offers a novella’s worth of curry, noodle and rice dishes: red beef curry with a balanced, spicy sweetness, and just-right rice noodles in the shrimp pad Thai—soft and slightly sticky—along with an average peanut vegetarian dish combining slightly overcooked veggies. While tom yum goong soup is too tart with lime juice, tom ka gai, though lives up to its heady scent, with just enough lemongrass and peppers to temper the rich coconut broth without overpowering it. Thai Angel’s servers may be a little short on English skills, but their pleasant demeanors lend the place some charm.
