The lowdown

Healthy fare gets a stylish upgrade at this vegetarian café from the cocktail maven behind Apotheke and Pulqueria and a former chef at Buvette. The egg sandwich, with cashew cheese, kale, and tomato jam on an English muffin, is a balanced meal in itself. It hits both sweet and savory notes, solving the ultimate conundrum of brunch-ordering. The menu includes an exceptional organic muesli, accented by local fruits and almond milk, and curry-flavored smashed avocado toast. It’s clear that the kitchen is showing restraint — nothing is too sweet, too rich, or too spicy. There’s also cold-pressed juice: The Goddess of Green (kale, cucumber, green apple, fennel, pineapple, thyme, and blue-green algae) is easy to drink in one sitting, but the almond milk is in need of sweetener. This could be the kind of café you frequent daily and nightly (it recently started serving dinner), except for two problems: The service is painfully slow, and the sparse seating isn’t at all comfortable. Bar stools are strategically placed to look out the window, but they’re too far away from the counter to eat properly. Try to score one of the coveted tables — but if you’re not able to, pick up this food to go and enjoy it from the comfort of your couch. It’s okay to be lazy if you’re eating this healthily.
