Profile

It’s easy to walk right by the darkly-lit Castello Plan, despite its prime location on the main drag of Cortelyou Road in Ditmas Park. Inside, the small, welcoming, wood-tiled room feels more like Vermont than Brooklyn. Young couples share romantic meals, groups of friends pick at cheese plates, and everyone drinks lots of wine. Boasting a more than one hundred-bottle list (mostly Italian and French) with a generous by-the-glass selection, this spot is first and foremost a wine bar. But the food, a rustic fusion of classic Italian and French dishes that change monthly, stands just fine on its own. Seafood dishes like scallops topped with crab mousse are a good match for a bottle of Chardonnay, while fans of full-bodied Italian reds will delight in heartier dishes like a deliciously tender duck confit or roasted rabbit. Cured Italian meats and a wide range of cheeses, served on carved wooden boards, complement any wine choice. End on a sweet note with homemade blueberry cheesecake or, sample the chocolate-espresso cups, which come in sweet-savory flavors like smoky paprika and spicy cayenne.
