The lowdown

This nautical-themed dive bar’s clientele is drawn in, in large part, by the kitschy cocktails (the house drink is a piña colada with an amaretto float) the cheap beer, and the festive vibe. But the Commodore is also home to some of the best sticky-fingered, deep-fried, unabashedly undainty pub grub in town. “Order from the bar” is the house rule, which can be a pain when the place is mobbed with its usual contingent of tattooed locals. But once dinner arrives, all is forgiven. Particularly great are the hot and juicy fried chicken that comes with a craggy crust that crackles like a good croissant when you bite into it; a towering burger with first-rate fries; and the “adult cheese” sandwich: a gooey pimento-and-poblano-spiked assemblage of such creamy, crispy texture and rich, tangy flavor that it must be too fine to waste on the neighborhood’s booming toddler population.
