Profile

This venue is closed.

The Harlem Tea Room has offered a serene and upscale environment for tea, sandwiches, soups, salads, and diet-busting, down-home desserts since 2004. Its warm, retro-style dining room is restrained yet romantic: wooden tables, chairs, and mahogany-stained floors are set off by red silk curtains, paisley banquettes, and old-fashioned hanging lamps with bulbous glass shades. A mosaic-encrusted tea bar is topped with a copper counter. The excellent selection of nearly two dozen teas features black, green, white, herbal, and fruit-flavored varieties. On the solid-food side, there’s a good selection of better-than-average sandwiches, like the subtly tangy Caribbean curry chicken sandwich, served on a brioche bun. Restraint goes to the winds with dessert: The bourbon pecan pie, served warm, packs a powerful sugar kick with caramelized Georgia pecans, a rich filling flavored with Kentucky whiskey, and a wonderful shortbread crust.

Afternoon Tea

Tues.–Fri., 3:30 p.m; Sat.–Sun., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Includes a pot of tea, scones, four assorted tea sandwiches, and a sampling of desserts for $20 per person. Reservations are required.

Recommended Dishes

Caribbean dreams tea, $3.50; Caribbean curry chicken sandwich, $8; bourbon pecan pie, $4.50
