The lowdown

A New England-y front bar room, a cozier rear, and an adorable garden fill nightly with East Villagers stuck in the city but hungering for the shore. Most bottles of wine are priced to move, and the lobster sandwich — on its fluffy brioche bun — is one of the city’s most famous for a reason. The restaurant has since spawned an outpost on the Upper West Side and an oyster bar in Greenwich Village, but we still love the charm and patina of the East Village original the best.
