Profile

The Monarch Room, a mega-restaurant located across the street from Chelsea Market’s side entrance on a quieter block near the Meatpacking District, is a good place to eat before a night out on the town. The decor is industrial-chic, with attractive cement walls, a large split staircase, and many dark leather banquettes wrapped around tables meant for larger parties. Though the service is slow and the dining room can be astoundingly loud, the food’s really nice: The hamachi crudo comes in a delicate, delicious mustard-oil sauce; a hearty appetizer of ribbon pasta with braised short ribs, calabrian chiles, and Parmesan is decadent and fun to share. Larger plates, like the simple but well-spiced duck breast with braised leeks, roasted sweet-potatoes, and a hibiscus sauce, are also impressive. Don’t skip the cocktails: North of the Border, with Montelobos mezcal, Don Julio blanco tequila, green chartreuse, jalapeño-infused Aperol, lime, agave syrup, and grapefruit bitters, is creative and perfectly balanced.
