Owner Paul Kelepesis understands the plight of midtown nine-to-fivers struggling to find homemade, reasonably priced lunches. He opened the Soup Spot, an indoor takeout-only counter suspiciously reminiscent of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi set. Even in the most uninviting temperatures, the line outside the tiny, seatless Spot looks interminable, but flows efficiently. The seventeen-soup menu changes regularly and features conventional staples, like Italian wedding and seafood bisque, as well as oddball options such as mushroom brie and buffalo chicken. All of Kelepesis's soups are prepared with fresh produce and hormone-free proteins and packaged with a hunk of crusty bread and small apple or banana. Salad-and-sandwich combos are also up for grabs, but most attention is directed toward the piping-hot main event.
