Colombian restaurants aren’t exactly legion in the city—which makes Tierras Colombianas the standard bearer for many New Yorkers. Young Colombian couples, Greek families, and the rest of the multicultural crowd that flock here dig into the large platters of meaty fare. The Bandeja Campesina, or Country Plate, groans under the weight of its sheer variety: thin, pounded (albeit rather tough) steak, crunchy, salty chicharron (fried strips of pork with its skin), soupy beans, rice, sweet yellow plantains and avocado, all topped off with a fried egg. Even better, though no less hearty, is the sobrebarriga a la criolla, a braised flank steak that falls into tender, ropy shreds at the touch of a fork, topped with a tomato and onion sauce. Arepas here are not served sandwich-style, as at some of the city’s arepa bars, but are instead hockey puck-size white-corn cakes, with a crisp exterior and soft, rather bland inside—a cooling foil to the spicy chorizo or rich morcilla (blood sausage) that they accompany.
