Owner and neighborhood resident Lisa Bayer is a former personal chef, and her rotating menu of soups, salads, and sandwiches is full of unexpected ingredients, giving her food a highly personalized feel. A cheese sandwich may come as Brie, cucumber, and tarragon mayo on a baguette; roast beef could be topped by cheddar and caramelized onions. (Both are served with a house salad of red leaf, carrots, chickpeas, and sesame seeds tossed with a light vinaigrette.) The breakfast menu is equally thoughtful, and if the food feels a bit ahead of the neighborhood, the seventies décor reflects the area’s unfussy sensibility. The cramped quarters mean that neighbors get to know each other while sharing the indoor picnic table or the burnt-orange loveseat and Abominable Snowman-fur chair that Bayer found while thrift shopping. As for the coffee, it’s from a New York-based company called Kitten Coffee.
