This venue is closed. With its subtle façade and discreet black door, Tsukushi could almost be mistaken for a twenties speakeasy. Enter the hushed dining room, however, and the scene more closely resembles an early-nineties rec room in suburbia, complete with wood-paneled walls, pink carpeting, and a familiar-looking wall unit. Diners—including many New York–based Japanese chefs, charmed by Tsukuski chef Norihiko Manabe’s home-style cooking—perch at the tall bar or one of the blond wooden tables. The all-omakase menu changes nightly, though a characteristically vegetable- and seafood-heavy meal might begin with a chilled saucer of savory eggplant segments topped with a ground potato paste, followed up with choice sashimi cuts or fluke and sweet shrimp, or a buttery piece of miso-baked cod. The fixed menu can be supplemented with larger dishes like ramen or fried rice, but after five or six of these enchanting courses, more hardly feels necessary.
