Given the number of tasty and affordable Indian options in nearby Curry Hill, Tulsi would need to be either intensely delicious or intensely creative to merit its high prices. Sadly, many dishes on Hemant Mathur's (Devi) menu are neither – one gets the sense the glitzy-cheesy surroundings (with baubles and canopied booths) are the primary justification for your high bill. Lamb chops are particularly offensive: 36 bucks for a foursome of overdone, forgettable chunks of meat. A trio of eggplant includes a tasty portion of a yogurty dip-like substance, a stuffed version, and a superfluous fritter---a pretty tiny amount of food in all. Samosas are just as they should be, however, as are breads. The best dish turns out to be the humblest: the chickpea fry-up known as chole bhature, has all the hoped-for flavor and spice (not to mention accompanying puffy bread fritters).
