Though the food is ho-hum, this younger sibling of the former Mulberry Street tourist trap is not without its charms—it boasts shaded sidewalk seating, baskets of warm, crusty bread, and al dente pasta. The menu is straightforward Italian (saucy eggplant parm, homemade lasagna and spaghetti crushed under baseball-sized meatballs) but oriented heavily towards seafood—in particular, clams appear on the half shell, on a pizza and with linguini in what’s referred to as a white sauce but is actually more like a watery puddle. Calamari arrives looking like it took a bath in lukewarm oil—pasty and soggy. Shrimp scampi over rice tastes oddly lemony. A simple tossed salad is a refreshing carb alternative, with juicy red tomatoes, cubes of provolone, and spicy peperoncini in a mild oregano vinaigrette. On a sunny day, sipping an iced tea under an umbrella and watching the bustling commerce of Arthur Avenue, Umberto’s suits just fine, but given the myriad other options nearby, the fare disappoints.
