Profile

Stroll away from Central Park above 75th Street, and you may notice that French and Italian kitchens dot your path like capers on a carpaccio. This ubiquity didn’t stop two expats from opening their own bistro within a fifteen-minute walk of the Met. There’s a lot of art in their chic indoor dining area, too. You’ll find a raw bar and simple starters like blistered shishito peppers with lemon and chorizo croquettes, plus a few flatbread options topped with wild mushrooms or chicken with artichokes. Mains consist mostly of beef and seafood dishes (with one vegetarian option), and the roasted market fish is elevated by a half-lemon, grilled for extra tartness and easy squeezing. Don’t leave without a slice of the smooth and light ricotta cheesecake. Vella also serves brunch, offering a menu filled with hearty dishes like steak and eggs and a smoked salmon Benedict—a good ending to a day spent touring a beautiful museum.

Happy Hour

$7 select wines and half-price oysters at the bar from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
