After a seven-month hiatus and an ownership change, this narrow bistro, decked out like a roadside cantina, is serving delicious Mexican classics. Past the mahogany bar, in the back dining area, patio furniture is decked out with plastic tablecloths printed with fruits and flowers. Mayan masks peer out from within two fireplaces that have been strung up with Christmas lights, and exposed brick walls brace giant mirrors in ornate wood frames and display age-worn photos of Mexican war heroes. A similar home-style touch comes through in the food: Pulled roasted chicken, sliced jalapenos, and torn cilantro pack the citrusy broth of lime chicken soup; pollo slides off the bone into its complex mole that mingles bananas, raisins and cinnamon with the savory tastes of almonds, sesame seeds and dry peppers; house enchiladas stuffed with shrimp and poblano peppers rest in a sweet and spicy ancho chili sauce, and are encased in layer of salty, melted cheese. Especiales de los gringos—burritos, fajitas and tacos—are mostly bland tortilla packages. Any inadequacies fade away with help from the whirring frozen-margarita machine, which may be why the wait staff responds to the sound of slurping like firemen to an engine house bell.
