Almost hidden in a dark spot on a side street in the Financial District, this chrome street cart would be easy to miss if it weren't for the long lines that inevitably form in front of it every weekday lunch hour. Here, owner Veronica Julien has developed a loyal following among construction workers and Wall Street traders alike for spooning out a rotating menu of traditional favorites from her native Trinidad. The fanaticism is understandable: Luscious chunks of oxtail meat fall off the bone, the jerk chicken is moist and flavorful without being greasy or overpoweringly spicy or salty, and the yams, while very sweet, are a perfect way to balance out the richness and kick in most other menu items. The downsides are pedestrian. One, the single square of napkin you get is a laughable solution for the delicious mess that slops over the sides of the Styrofoam containers. And two, Veronica's advertised closing time is merely an optimistic guess—she regularly sells out of her most popular items by 2 p.m.

Veronica's moves to Governor's Island on summer weekends, Sat.–Sun., 10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
