Restaurateur Manolo Caisaguano opened this Upper East Side venture in 2008, just doors down from his popular Italian restaurant Firenze. Though Vicino Firenze offers more space, little else distinguishes it from the original. Thoughtful touches like fresh flowers, wood paneling, and drip candles create a similarly gentle ambience, and the same Tuscan specialties anchor the menu, including signature dishes like bistecca, a grilled porterhouse steak prepared tableside, and rich pappardelle pasta with porcini mushrooms. While some plates, like degustazione di salume—a platter of cured meats including prosciutto and house-cured duck bresaola— maximize fresh ingredients like melon for added punch, otherwise tasty dishes often suffer from bland vegetable sides. These minor misses aside, most dishes work exceedingly well; a winning rigatoni is stuffed with ricotta cheese and layered with a rich tomato, eggplant, and leek ragu.
