Profile

Inside Whitman & Bloom, it’s easy to forget about the raucous sports fans filing into the Third Avenue bars just outside; this restaurant is a quiet and classed-up respite from Kips Bay’s usual haunts. An exhaustive cocktail list is heavy on vodka, bourbon, and fruits. Below the dining room, there’s a sleepy piano bar, but upstairs, moose heads, flower pots, and mason jars give Whitman & Bloom a farmhouse feel, and the menu matches the décor. Freshly baked focaccia choices change daily; the kitchen makes its own yogurt-based cheese, which is best with a whole head of crispy roasted cauliflower. Grilled lamb ribs, which can be ordered in a half- or full-size portions, are served with various kinds of roasted and sautéed onions, and the tender meat falls off the bone easily. The dessert menu is limited, but it might be a sin to leave without trying the chocolate cake and homemade lavender ice cream.
