Occupying a spacious corner on a quiet block in the UES, this old-time bar and restaurant has a distinctly divey appeal. In addition to a jukebox near the entrance, the dimly lit dining room is decorated with an assortment of grubby wooden cigar-store Indian statues, antique signs, and well-worn red and white checkered tablecloths. The local, mostly silver-haired patrons occupy tables near the eatery’s large windows and seem to prefer the affordable, middle-of-the-road entrees like prime rib with mashed potatoes or chopped steak or sautéed calves livers. While such familiar entrees are decently executed, if not exciting, The Wicked Wolf’s mainstays are clearly its burgers. The popular, substantial blue cheeseburger, a juicy, inch-thick beef patty, smothered in blue cheese, is served on a fluffy, toasted English muffin—a great accompaniment to an ice-cold brew. It may not be the best burger in town, but with a kitchen that stays open until 3 a.m., the Wicked Wolf is a solid stop for alcohol-absorbing pub grub.
