Yi Mei is one of two seemingly identical but definitively separate restaurants that share the same address, peering out into the concrete cavern under the Manhattan Bridge overpass. Yi Mei (also known as New Bai Wei) is the somewhat grungier of the two, kind of like an indoor alleyway crowded with tiny tables, plastic chairs and a motley assortment of local Chinese workers and students. The bathroom is definitely not for those with delicate stomachs. In the food department, Yi Mei does a reasonable job of making up for its looks, especially with its hoisin-accented braised tofu and peppery, garlicky sauteed greens. The savory, enjoyably chewy "fresh squid" also deserves some notice because it actually lives up to its name and is fresh. Though a menu's posted on the window, both customers and staff ignore it in favor of a generous $3.50 tasting plate of rice, an anemic broth, and four items from a dizzying array of exotic eats from the counter at the front door.
