Despite its modest surroundings (and silly name), Yummy Taco hustles out Tex-Mex standards that are well priced and—well, yummy. Telltale signs of quality? The Jack cheese stays warm and stringy in the quesadilla; the fried onions and peppers, though moist, are still crispy; the soft-shell taco does not fall apart in your hands, and its hard-shell cousin does not shatter at the first bite. The freshly pressed tortillas can take a session in the microwave without turning to rubber, and—best of all—the chili burrito carries the spicy-sweet cocoa taste of mole poblano. With a 130-item menu (plus lunch specials), Yummy Taco offers every combination of taco, burrito, quesadilla, and salad, with fresh chicken, grilled steak, chorizo, shrimp, chili, and crispy vegetables. Though the place and its eight tables have all the ambience of a bus station, the food is prepared fast for takeout and is an ideal launching pad for an evening at nearby Freddy’s. If you do stay, rest assured that it’s safe—you’re but a taquito’s throw from the 78th precinct station.
