Of the Upper East Side locations—all situated within blocks of one another—that make up the Yura & Company triumvirate, the Third and 93rd Street shop is the baking neurocenter. Industrial-size ovens and mixers, stacks of bread pans and muffin tins, and racks of cooling cookies and brioche form the backdrop in this light and lofty corner space—and fill it with heavenly aromas. A vintage carved wooden counter displays the day's wares—fruit-packed muffins and scones, four kinds of brownies, poppy and cinnamon-swirled quick breads, dainty tea and bundt cakes, homey crisps, and towers of coconut-crowned and sprinkle-encrusted cakes and micro-cupcakes. Black and white checker-tile floors and light fixtures fashioned from aluminum colanders add to the old-time bakeshop feel; exposed ductwork and slick cellophane packaging remind you that you're in the Big Apple. Ensconced in built-in window seats and a half-dozen café tables are spray-tanned moms with sport utility strollers, eager to down the homemade whoopee pie or a slice of moist carrot cake, its crumb and icing infused with essence of orange. Pies may satisfy your sweet tooth but nothing more: The crusts are tough and the fillings canned and gelatinous. With that in mind, indulge.
