While Fulton Street Mall has more than 150 stores, the pickings are slim when it comes to food. Zam’s, essentially the equivalent to a Quiznos, offers an alternative to the fast food joints lining the retail strip. Although its combinations aren’t as inspired as the franchise, at least one of the 25 “Tozt” sandwiches should satisfy famished shoppers. Crisp and dusted with sesame seeds, massive BLT, Cuban, and Chicken Parmigiana sandwiches are freshly pressed. Apart from the standards, patrons can pile on eggplant, grilled chicken, and fresh mozzarella to create their own heaping concoctions. Soups, a make-your-own salad bar, and seven types of quesadillas are available, but the sandwich is clearly Zam’s signature. There’s a steel counter and a few two-tops in back.
Recommended DishesFresh mozzarella, pesto, and sweet peppers sandwich with plum tomato and olive oil, $5.99; turkey, brie, plum tomato and honey mustard sandwich, $5.99
