Owner Mehdi Kabbaj and his partner, Adriane Birt, opened 20 Peacocks as a paean to the sensual pleasures of clothes-shopping in Europe. The Lower East Side spot mingles shirts from the store’s own Peacock Tales label—which often sport multicolored patterns—with those of Italian designers. A TV in the narrow, warmly lit space quietly broadcasts the day’s news or a soccer match while customers peruse the collection of shirts, ties, pocket squares, and wallets, accented by small placards with sartorial dictums ("Basics of a Good Shirt"). Kabbaj and Birt favor flair: Candy-striped ties stand out against Oxfords with contrast stitching. While the size selection is generally mid-range, men can order custom-made shirts, selecting everything right down to thread color and cuff accents.
