Though it has no official affiliation with the legendary UWS bagelry—the original owners parted ways years ago—H&H Midtown Bagels East touts the same round-the-clock freshness as its counterpart, and then some. This renegade offshoot knows that man can not live on bagel alone so it supplements its 15 varieties with 18 spreads and a range of deli staples. Fresh chicken, chopped herring, and whitefish salads, and five different knishes—including a rarely-seen sweet potato version—fill the refrigerators while rugelach, hamentashen, and black-and-white cookies lure from the pastry cases. Yet granite-top tables with 80s-era chrome chairs, which permit customers to stay awhile, may be this spinoff’s most welcome break from tradition.
